The present report aims at investigating the deposition of gold onto reticulated vitreous carbon (RVC) from a solution that contains AuCl4 – ions and sodium chloride as a supporting electrolyte at different pH values. Thermodynamic parameters of the system were obtained. Evaluation of these parameters indicates that the exothermic gold deposition reaction tends to proceed spontaneously. The results showed that pH 3 is the most favoured condition for gold electrodeposition in terms of deposition rate and reducing anode usage. The grains of gold on RVC at pH 1 were smaller and more homogeneous. This fine structure offers the possibility of Au supported substrate to be used for catalytic applications. By increasing pH from 1 to 7, the spherical grains formed aggregates and tended to form sponge shaped gold at pH 7. The use of AuNPs/RVC as a catalyst for the ethanol oxidation was investigated.
