Following the victory of Counter-Reformation in late sixteenth – early seventeenth century, the Catholic Church in Lithuania began to regain its former position. In some locations onceclosed- down churches were re-established, in others, after wavering the storm of Reformation, they put claims to regain sequestrated real estate, unpaid dues in kind (tithe) or cash. Such proceedings generated much lawsuit with grand ducal and private estates. The law cases of this kind fell largely within the brief of the Assessors’ court whose members were nominated by the ruler and had their headquarters at the royal palace. This article deals with cases related to the churches of Pabaiskas, Punia, Baisogala, Vilkmergė (modern Ukmergė), Nemenčinė, Stakliškės, Merkinė, Šėta, Gražiškės, Vižainys. These cases provide much information on the local history of the above mentioned churches, on the persons involved in these lawsuits and on the court procedures of the time.
