Lietuvių esė postmodernizmo situacijoje: Rolandas Rastauskas
Laima ARNATKEVIČIŪTĖ

Lithuanian contemporary essay writing seems very much like postmodernism in its main characteristic features: postmodernism favours criticism and pluralism and emphasizes subjectivity. The latter and other features of Lithuanian essay are well reflected in Rolandas Rastauskas’s literary works written within 1993 and 2003 and compiled into a selection named Another World (lith. Kitas pasaulis) in 2004. The selection wins distinction in its elaborated style, a vivid and modern sense of the word. Rastauskas’s essay is reflections of present and past processes and of self-consciousness changes of one’s own and of the generation that are based on a deep erudition and a wide Lithuanian and worldwide cultural content. From the form and style of the essay writing perspective, Rastauskas’s essay fully portrays the links of this genre with fragmentation and dicta and thus is equally good to serve as a sample of a resonant genre. The essay verifies that having mastered the forms of expression and the ways of thinking the contemporary Lithuanian essay writing echoes one of the key needs of its contemporary readers, related to the specifics of such genre, – the work emphasises the time topicalities and thus reveals them in a wider cultural and/or historical context as condensed as possible but simultaneously in an attractive, lambent and intellectual way.
