Rytinio Baltijos regiono devono tyrimų istorija (iki 1910 m.)
Gailė ŽALŪDIENĖ

The history of Devonian research covers 150 year. In this period, of the highest significance were the geognostic expedition organized by E. Eichwald, R. Murchison, the first knowledge about North Lithuanian karst (Theodor Grotthus, Jan Ferber), description of remain fossils (L. Buch, G. Pusch, E. von Toll). Of great importance were the works by C. Grevingk and A. Tornquist. C. Grewingk allocated and presented concrete data on the Devonian of the Baltic region (1861). Most significant for researches were the first boreholes Purmaliai (1877) and Ripeikiai (1874). In 1899, E. von Toll in the area of Pakruojis, in an exposure of the river Mūša, found brachiopod (Spirifer archiaci) remnants. On their basis the productive zone, the Upper Devonian, was allocated. In the period 1919–1940 the first expeditions in Lithuania were organized by Professors of Kaunas University J. Dalinkevičius and M. Kaveckis. The first Devonian correlations in the area of the Baltic region are based or works by J. Dalinkevičius, N. Delle, E. Krauss.
