Role of Ferro-bacteria in the migration of iron and manganese compounds in the Lithuanian groundwater

In the majority of cases, the concentrations of iron and manganese in the groundwater used in the Lithuanian water supply system exceed the sanitary norms. The migration forms of these metals in the groundwater mostly depend on the activity of bacteria oxidizing iron and manganese. The development and quantitative relations of ferro-bacteria depend on the degree of the isolation of aquifers predetermining the thermodynamic and hydrogeochemical environment. Optimal conditions for the development of ferro-bacteria and oxidation potential of dominant genera in typical hydrodynamic structures of the Lithuania groundwater were determined.
